Mysterious Illness Claims Eight Lives in Sukma’s Dhanikorta Village, Health Department Investigates
Mysterious Illness Claims Eight Lives in Sukma’s Dhanikorta Village
Sukma: In the past two months, a mysterious illness has claimed the lives of eight villagers in Dhanikorta village, located in the Chhindgarh block of Sukma district. Most of the deceased had complained of severe pain in the chest and limbs before their deaths.
In response to the alarming situation, the health department set up a three-day health camp in the village, where 80 villagers were examined. Among them, 37 people reported body pain, while nine were diagnosed with malaria. Some critically ill patients were referred to the district hospital, while others are receiving primary treatment. However, the exact cause of these deaths remains undetermined.

A significant concern in the village is the lack of health awareness. Villagers often rely on traditional healing practices and rituals before seeking medical treatment. The village has four vaddes (traditional worship sites) where religious rituals and faith-based healing methods are performed.
It is worth noting that over the past four years, more than 90 villagers in different parts of Sukma have died from similar unidentified illnesses. Although the region is no longer severely affected by Naxal activities and government schemes have started reaching the area, the health department has yet to initiate a large-scale awareness campaign.
